first_imgPROVO — It’s been a while since so many red numbers adorned the scoreboard at the Cougar Classic golf tournament, perhaps back in the mid-1980s.Seven of BYU’s 10 scores in two rounds Friday were under par and nine were par or better, which allowed the Cougars to lap the field after 36 holes of the 54-hole annual tournament.Going into today’s final 18 holes, BYU owns a 14-shot lead over Nevada with a 26-under-par total of 550. The next two teams in the 19-team tournament, UTEP and Colorado State, are another 10 strokes back at 574.”Twenty-six under, that’s pretty good,” said BYU coach Bruce Brockbank. “In this day and age with the talent there is in college golf, it’s very hard to have a 10- or 15-shot lead or whatever. Usually you have to play great golf to separate yourself from the field, and that’s what we did today.”The Cougars also have the individual leader in Jake Ellison, who stands at 133 after rounds of 66 and 67. The senior from St. George leads Utah junior Dustin Pimm and Nevada’s Chase Cooper by four shots.”I putted really well today,” said Ellison, who sank a 35-footer on his second hole to get him going. “I hit a lot of good shots to 10 feet or so and made them.”Ellison said the team competition is the main thing, but he wouldn’t mind getting the individual trophy today. Despite several second- and third-place finishes during his career, Ellison has yet to win a college tournament.”I’m just going to try to play like I did today and just play one shot at a time,” Ellison said. “I’ve never won a college tournament before, so (to win) would mean a lot to me.”BYU’s Daniel Summerhays and Robbie Fillmore had identical rounds of 67 and 71 and are tied for fourth at 138. New Mexico State’s Travis Reid and BYU freshman Brady Johnson, who was playing as an individual, are another stroke back at 139.The Cougars’ Clay Ogden is tied for 13th at 141, while Nick Becker stands at 149 in 55th place.Utah is in sixth place at 578, a stroke behind New Mexico State, while Southern Utah is in ninth at 585.Among the other local teams, Utah State is tied for 13th at 595, Utah Valley State is 17th at 599 and Weber State is 19th at 601. Players will tee off beginning at 8 this morning with the final groups going off at 10 a.m. E-mail: sor@desnews.comlast_img
