Re “Green Christmas” (Dec. 4): I am sick of people flaunting their “greenness” at every level – but this takes the cake. One of my vehicles gets 50 mpg, and can travel in the car-pool lane also (a Kawasaki 650). Unfortunately it is not “green” because it does not have an electric motor and nickel-based battery pack that is one of the worst substances to mine on this planet. And I could go on and on. – Eric Boka Simi Valley AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREPettersson scores another winner, Canucks beat Kings False facts Re “Porn is evil” (Dec. 4): I’m very tired of seeing the Daily News print letters that include blatantly false claims and easily disproved statements masquerading as facts. This letter says “the term `pornography’ comes from two Greek words meaning `evil writing’ or `evil pictures.”‘ This is simply untrue. According to the Merriam Webster Collegiate dictionary and the American Heritage Dictionary, the word “pornography” is derived from the Greek “pornographos,” which literally means “writing about prostitutes.” The word contains no implication whatsoever of anything “evil” – or about pictures, for that matter. Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but everyone is not entitled to his own facts. – James Dawson Woodland Hills Traffic ideas It’s great that the city of Los Angeles will create a long-term plan for traffic congestion. However, there are several ways that we can reduce congestion on our freeways without touching the infrastructure. For example, why does everyone have to commute downtown between Monday and Friday? Why couldn’t some companies or city government offer its work force some alternative schedules? Flexible schedules could allow us to fully utilize our freeways and transit systems on the weekends. Also, we should encourage all companies to utilize their branch offices so that some people would not have to commute. We should also reintroduce Ride Share Thursday. All of these scenarios would help us reduce our commute times, save gas and remind us that we are one large community. – Lisa Martellaro-Palmer Van Nuys Law favors insurer Re “Hit, run & get away – 50% do” (Dec 3): When my car was rear-ended by a hit and run driver, the adjuster (based in Arizona) told me I was covered under the “uninsured coverage” on my policy. However, it turned out that in California the law protects the insurance companies, not the insured. Because I was not able to get the license number of the car that drove away, I had to pay the full amount of the deductible on my policy. – Marion Mandeson Glendale Blue and white Re “Symbol of faith” (Dec. 2): Try to find these Hanukkah items, traditionally blue and white, in the markets, drugstores and retail stores, among the abundant red and green Christmas decor. I was both saddened and annoyed as I drove last night along Ventura Boulevard from Sherman Oaks through Studio City to see virtually no display of blue and white. Perhaps I was blinking! – Thelma Bronet Sherman Oaks Foot the bill Re “Firefighter wins firing settlement” (Dec. 6): Taxpayers have shelled out more than $14million to Los Angeles city firefighters in legal settlements this year and they should brace to hand out more big bucks next year. The deputy chief who is the subject of numerous lawsuits making their way through the courts and who was at the center of Capt. Frank Lima’s unanimous $3.75million jury award in June is still in charge of risk management, a position responsible for reducing risk, lawsuits and large payouts. Explain that to the taxpayers who have to continue to foot the bill. – Chris and Eric Mattson (LAFD retired) Fallbrook Not safe Teacher Gillian Gibbons may be back in England. But she is not safe or sound by a long shot. There must be more than a few Islamic radicals there who would surely like her punished for her blasphemy.
