Facebook for Every Phone Aims to Bring Facebook To the Entire World

first_imgFacebook unveiled a new mobile application yesterday called Facebook for Every Phone, designed to bring the social platform to every corner of the globe. The new mobile app has been designed to work with 2,500 feature phones across cellular carriers worldwide which could bring Facebook to users in the developing world that do not have access to smartphones or computers.Facebook is teaming with 20 international carriers to offer free data access for up to 90 days. The Every Phone app is designed with Java but uses less data than other Java applications or an HTML5 mobile website, making the service much more affordable. Is this the type of move that many in the Western world shrug off but could end up drastically increasing the amount of users that use Facebook across the globe? Inside Facebook has been tracking Facebook’s feature phone efforts for two years, registering a peak of 1.89 million daily active users (DAU). That is a small fraction of Facebook’s 750 million users. Facebook was working with Israeli feature phone application maker Snaptu for its feature phone efforts before acquiring the company for a reported $70 million in March. The app will be available through m.facebook.com or by going to d.facebook.com/install directly from a feature phone mobile browser. It will also be available in app stores including Getjar, Appia and Mobile Weaver. The partnership with the 20 international carriers is a clever move by Facebook and beneficial to both parties. The carriers will be able to attract more users to data plans or pay-as-you-go services while Facebook should be able to boost its user-base on feature phones well above the 1.76 current DAUs.By the end of 2011,there will be over six billion cellular connections. That includes all devices that consume data – not just phones – but a significant portion of that total will be feature phones. A principal of business is “go where the people are.” When it comes to world wide mobile use, feature phones are where the people are. This move could be the boost that Facebook uses to bump itself over the 1 billion user mark. It will open up a world of targeted advertising and special verticals to parts of the world that were previously unavailable to Facebook or extremely limited. dan rowinski Related Posts Tags:#Facebook#mobile#web Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagementcenter_img What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technologylast_img read more

Saskatchewan government says its cracking down on trafficking of fish

first_imgConservation officers say they were alerted in 2016 that two people were selling fish illegally.Kathleen MartensAPTN NewsA nearly two-year, undercover operation helped catch two poachers, netted $15,500 in fines and cracked down on ‘trafficking of fish,’ the Saskatchewan government says.In a release Friday, the Ministry of Environment addressed questions about the time and energy it put into catching Indigenous fishermen from Canoe Narrows, about 400 kilometres north of Saskatoon.Donald Iron, 60, and Richard Desjardin, 63, were fined in provincial court last week after they illegally sold more than 200 walleye without a licence. Both men are band members of Canoe Lake First Nation.“In the 1970s and ‘80s, walleye populations in Canoe Lake crashed and took years to recover,” the government’s release says.“As a result, extra efforts were taken to curb the unlawful trafficking of fish from Canoe Lake.”Iron was fined a total of $1,080 after being found guilty of three counts of illegally selling fish and three counts of selling fish without a licence.Desjardin pleaded guilty to three counts of marketing fish without a licence, and single counts of commercial fishing without a licence, fishing in a close area and obstructionHe was fined $14,500 and his truck forfeited to the Crown. The release describes both men as targets of an undercover operation after the ministry received complaints that two men were illegally selling fish.“Undercover officers were able to purchase fish from both individuals, with one selling a significant amount more than the other.”The release said they were guilty of taking fish from an area of Canoe Lake that has been closed for 20 years to protect the walleye spawning ground – with what the release says was the full support of Canoe Lake First Nation.Canoe Lake Chief Francis Iron couldn’t be reached for comment Friday.Charges against two alleged accomplices were stayed, the release [email protected]@katmartelast_img read more

Study predicts Trans Mountain pipeline buy will add to federal deficit

first_imgThe federal government agreed to buy the existing pipeline, expansion project and terminals from Kinder Morgan Canada for $4.5 billion after the company threatened to walk away from the Trans Mountain expansion project. The government has said it doesn’t plan to be a long-term owner and is looking for buyers, including Indigenous communities, pension funds and the Alberta government. The Trans Mountain expansion project has faced significant opposition over concerns of oil spills, tanker traffic and increased oilsands production.(THE CANADIAN PRESS) CALGARY, A.B. – A study by a sustainable energy research group predicts the federal government’s purchase of the Trans Mountain pipeline will add significantly to the deficit next year. The study by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis says the buying the Kinder Morgan Canada assets, plus planning and construction costs, will put $6.5 billion in unplanned spending on the books for the 2018-19 fiscal year.Study authors Tom Sanzillo and Kathy Hipple say that until the Ottawa clarifies how it plans to account for the spending, there’s a risk the purchase could add 36 per cent to the projected $18.1-billion deficit.last_img read more

Suvendu trains gun on Cong in Malda

first_imgChanchal (Malda): Launching a blistering attack on a section of Congress leaders in Malda, senior Trinamool Congress leader and the state Transport minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday said that some Congress leaders in the area are working for BJP and trying to weaken TMC’s fight against the party.Adhikari attended a rally organised by Trinamool Congress at Chanchal in Malda, in favour of Mausam Benazir Noor who is contesting from the Malda North Parliamentary constituency on TMC’s ticket. The district Trinamool Congress leaders announced that they would hold a rally countering the rally of Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Gandhi had taken part in an election rally at the same venue on Saturday. Adhikari alleged that Gandhi’s rally would weaken the anti-BJP campaign led by his party. A section of Congress leaders in Malda are trying to provide political mileage to BJP, he added. Is it to weaken the anti-BJP forces in the district or to give others (BJP) political mileage? Many Congress leaders had joined hands with the BJP during the last Panchayat elections. These Congress leaders were traitors and conspired with the BJP to form the Panchayat board,” said Adhikari. He also reminded that Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav did not allow the Congress to be a part of the pre-poll alliance, because they knew that forging any such alliance would benefit the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. He also urged the people of Malda not to fall into the trap of Congress. China claims positive progress made to resolve issue of listing Azhar as global terrorist by UN

first_imgBeijing: China on Monday claimed that “positive progress” has been made to resolve the issue of designating Pakistan-based JeM chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist by the UN and accused the US of scuttling its efforts by taking the matter directly to the Security Council. China last week defended its repeated attempts to block the listing of Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Azhar as a global terrorist and refuted the US allegation that Beijing’s action amounted to protecting violent Islamic groups from sanctions. China criticised the US move for directly taking the issue of listing Azhar as global terrorists to UN Security Council after Beijing put a technical hold on the US, UK and French resolution earlier to declare him as global terrorist in the UN’s 1267 committee dealing with counter terrorism issues. “After the application for designation of Azhar was proposed (in the 1267 committee), China is in close communication and coordination with various parties and made positive progress. The US knows that very well,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a media briefing here on Monday. Asked to clarify whether the progress he meant was to resolve the vexed issue of listing Azhar, Geng said “yes. The US knows that very well”. He, however, did not elaborate. China has so far blocked the move four times in recent years. It recently blocked a US, UK and France resolution in the counter terrorism 1267 committee with “technical hold” saying that it provides time and space for the relevant parties to hold talks after the Pulwama terrorist attack. Following this, the US directly moved a resolution in the UN Security Council last week to blacklist Azhar which China said amounted to undermining the 1267 Committee. This is the first-time Beijing spoke of progress to resolve it. “We believe under the current circumstances forcing a draft resolution at the Security Council is not a constructive move and set a bad example , Geng said. Lashing out at the US for taking the Azhar issue to the UNSC from the 1267 Committee which also functioned under UNSC framework, Geng claimed support from majority of UNSC members to China’s stand that the issue should be resolved by the 1267 Committee. We hope various parties will meet each other half way and continue to properly solve this issue under the 1267 Committee framework. Last Friday, UNSC members exchanged views on the US proposed draft resolution. The majority believes that efforts should be made to solve the issues under 1267 Committee framework,” he said. They are not in favour of forcing the draft resolution. China has been working with various parties and is making progress. The US knows that very well and yet, it insists on pushing the Security Council to adopt the draft resolution,” he said. This cannot be justified and is not in accordance with the rules and practices of the Security Council. It is setting a bad example that will only complicate the matter. It is also not conducive for peace and stability in South Asia. China is opposed to this,” he said. To another question about criticism that the US is making hasty efforts to list Azhar by bypassing procedures to benefit BJP in India’s General Elections, Geng said the US’ stand is not conducive to peace and stability in South Asia. It is setting a bad example that will only complicate the matter. It is also not conducive for peace and stability in South Asia. The General Elections is the domestic affair of India. We do not comment on that,” he said. About Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan performing the ground breaking ceremony of the international airport at Gwadar being constructed by a Chinese company, Geng said China and Pakistan, under the framework of Belt and Road Initiative, have entered into mutually beneficial cooperation. The example you mentioned is just one case in this regard. We appreciate the Prime Minister’s attendance of the ceremony, we have confidence the progress of the two countries’ practical cooperation, which is important for the welfare of our people, the region and the wider world , he said.last_img read more

At times you must wipe off failure to move on: Stokes

first_imgNew Delhi: Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Ben Stokes took the Indian Premier League by storm in 2017 as he finished his debut season in the cash-rich league with 316 runs and 12 wickets from 12 games. However, post the high of that opening season, the Englishman struggled in 2018. And even this year, he has managed to score just 112 runs and picked six wickets from 8 games. But for the all-rounder, it is more important to move on, be the past bright or gloomy. Commenting on the performance of the Royals, Stokes said: “I wouldn’t quite say up and down as that would be a bit generous. We haven’t performed anywhere near to the capabilities that we have. The games we have won, we have won the critical moments and it is a shame that we have managed to do that in just two games. The big thing this year is that we haven’t managed to win the critical moments.” Also Read – Vijender’s next fight on Nov 22, opponent to be announced laterStokes has himself had a rough ride, but the all-rounder feels that it comes with playing sport as ups and downs are a part and parcel of a cricketer’s life. “I think everybody would want to be consistent, but you take it as it comes. Everyone wants to go out and do their best every time, but sometimes it doesn’t come off and you just wipe out that part. Also, if you do well, you can’t live off that,” he smiled. Asked if the episode wherein Kings XI Punjab skipper R Ashwin eMankaded’ batsman Jos Buttler changed the course of Royals’ campaign this season, Stokes begged to differ.last_img read more

England Can Get Even Better And It Will Need To

Croatia74.879.2 Harry Kane0.640.86+0.23 But it’s not just luck for England. As Bobby Gardiner highlighted for FiveThirtyEight, England has developed a legitimately good team with a coherent tactical identity based on pressing immediately after a turnover to win back the ball in dangerous areas. As Gardiner outlined, this tactic was developed in part because most of England’s players ply their trade at some of the highest-pressing sides in the world. But that’s not the only reason: England also lacks a proper creative midfielder. None of the top 30 ball progressors in the big five leagues is English, and the 31st, Jack Wilshere, did not make the squad. The hope is that by forcing turnovers, England can get the ball in advanced positions without asking less expansive passers like Dier or Jordan Henderson to provide progression from deep areas. So far the results have been mixed. England was dominant against Tunisia and created a number of clear chances from open play. But against Panama, Belgium and Colombia, England relied primarily on set plays to get chances. So far in the World Cup, according to data analytics firm Opta Sports, England has 30 shots from set plays, the most in the tournament — Spain is second with 28. Where England has particularly excelled is in winning fouls in dangerous areas to get shots from free kicks, either with direct attempts on goal or designed set plays. The Three Lions’ 17 shots from free kicks are by far the most at the World Cup, with Spain and Argentina trailing at 12. Uruguay66.985.4 The incredible season that Mo Salah had for Liverpool somewhat obscured Sterling’s massive improvement in production — 22 goals and 12 assists in a little over 3,000 minutes in the Premier League and the Champions League. But set pieces aren’t Sterling’s game. While Kane attempted 26 headed shots last season in the Premier League, Sterling attempted just one. Sterling excels at receiving balls at his feet — he was second in the league in progressive passes received with 6.5.Though England’s set plays have been good for Kane — as his two goals against Tunisia demonstrated — they’ve done nothing for Sterling, who has no goals and just one assist in his three games played. The best way to get Sterling involved would be to develop an open-play strategy for getting the ball into the penalty area and allowing him to create. So long as England depends on set plays, the team sidelines one of its most dangerous attackers. The Three Lions have made it this far through an easy draw with the press and set play plan. But if England intends on defeating a superpower like Brazil or France and lifting the cup, it will need both of its forwards in the game.Check out our latest World Cup predictions. In other words, England is doing a good job of progressing the ball into the final third, and the team is being rewarded with set piece opportunities. However, these tactics do not suit one of England’s best players. England isn’t a legitimate World Cup contender simply because Harry Kane happened. At the same time that Kane was developing into one of soccer’s best pure strikers for Tottenham, Raheem Sterling was making the leap at Manchester City and becoming an elite inside forward. When Eric Dier drove his penalty kick just past the outstretched fingers of Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina and into the back of the net, he broke a 22-year English streak of losing on penalty kicks. The obvious question now is whether England can break a far more important streak that’s lasted even longer: 52 years without winning a World Cup.While every team in the quarterfinals has a nonzero chance of lifting the cup, this question presses on England particularly for two reasons. First, England got a massively fortunate draw. The two powerhouse teams remaining in the tournament, Brazil and France, are both on the opposite side of the bracket. Spain was supposed to block England’s path to the final, but it lost on penalties to Russia. This leaves just Sweden and either Croatia or Russia standing in the way of The Three Lions. And second, it’s not like England had to knock off the world’s best to get here. Drawn into a group with Tunisia and Panama as well as Belgium, England was hugely favored to reach the knockouts. Colombia as a round of 16 draw was difficult on paper, but the absence of superstar James Rodriguez meant that even this match was not against a true equal.According to FiveThirtyEight’s Soccer Power Index as a measure of the quality of competition,1We used the pre-tournament SPI ratings. Uruguay and Belgium have had the lightest schedule, but each would likely have to get through both Brazil and France to make the final. England has faced the third weakest set of opponents to date, and its run to the final is projected as the second easiest of all the remaining contenders, ever so slightly behind Croatia.2Future opponents’ SPI represents a weighted average of each possible opponent’s SPI in the semifinals and finals and the likelihood of that team advancing that far. Buford big for OSU as team nears finish line

Jared Sullinger is undoubtedly the star of the Buckeyes. The freshman forward is a sure-fire top-five pick in the NBA draft, draws the ire — and spit — of opposing fans and, most notably, runs the Columbus karaoke scene with his renditions of Miley Cyrus songs. He accounts for almost a quarter of OSU’s offense, an offense that runs mostly through him, despite freshman forward Deshaun Thomas’ best efforts. Yet, if the Buckeyes want to win a National Championship, it will hinge on the efforts of soft-spoken junior guard William Buford. His importance to the team was even more apparent in OSU’s two losses. Buford ignited his squad in the first and early second half of the game at Wisconsin. However, he disappeared at the end. OSU coach Thad Matta even said Buford, at the end of the game, lacked the same kind of aggressiveness he showed earlier. Against Purdue, he picked up two early fouls that knocked him out of rhythm. Still, in a game like that, he can’t take just five shots. When all else fails, like it did against Purdue for long stretches, the team needs Buford because he is the only one who can create his own shot off the dribble. College basketball — and really basketball, in general — is dominated by guard play. Of the past 20 players to win the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award, only five of them were primarily post players. Naturally, some of that is because of the overall lack of size in college basketball, as most tall and talented players go to the NBA after one year. That’s what makes a team like Ohio State, with a dominant post player, so tough to guard. Sullinger can only go as far as the rest of his team takes him. That’s where Buford comes in. Sure, fifth-year senior forward David Lighty has the ability to take over, but his jump shot isn’t consistent enough. Senior guard Jon Diebler is only a spot-up shooter, and freshman point guard Aaron Craft serves more as a facilitator, with most of his points coming in transition. We have seen Buford dominate in stretches of games this season, more thoroughly than ever before. His ball-handling skills have improved light-years beyond where they were even a year ago. At times, though, when he’s not the primary ball handler, and with Craft on the floor, he seems to be more passive. When Matta last had a dominant post player, Greg Oden, he took his team to the Final Four. That 2006–07 team’s run was aided by dominant guard play.
