The app-based facility will be launched for people to seek service of the nearest ambulance from the accident spot and rush the victim to appropriate hospitalsKerala will soon launch an e-network of ambulances on the lines of app-based global taxi operator Uber. Finance minister TM Thomas Isaac made the announcement during the presentation of the state budget for 2018-19 in the Assembly. An app-based facility would be launched for people to seek the service of the nearest ambulance from the accident spot and rush the victim to appropriate hospitals, he said.“A state-wide e-network of ambulance services on the lines of Uber taxi will be formulated,” the minister said, detailing various plans to be implemented in the healthcare sector. He recalled the recent death of an accident victim, hailing from Tamil Nadu, in the state due to alleged denial of treatment in various hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. An alternative system to avoid recurrence of such incidents would be implemented in the year 2018-19, he said. Emergency medical care should be provided free of cost in all hospitals including private establishments, the minister said. The government would disburse the amount for it from the road safety fund, he added. Last year, Tony Finau played in the Ryder Cup and was one of the standouts for the losing United States team, winning two of his three matches. The Utah native is back, as one of the top 12 golfers for the U.S., and he will compete in the biennial Presidents Cup matches this week at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia.Finau was one of captain Tiger Woods’ “captain’s picks” along with Patrick Reed, Gary Woodland and Woods himself. Rickie Fowler was also picked later to replace the injured Brooks Koepka. In announcing Finau as a captain’s pick last month, Woods described Finau as “overall, just a genuinely nice guy who everyone wants to play with.”He also predicted that at the event Finau will “light up the team room but will back it up on the course with consistent play.”Finau said making the Presidents Cup team was a goal of his at the start of the year and he’s excited to have the opportunity to play for one of his idols in Woods. Last year, Finau was also a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup team, which competed in France against the Europeans. The U.S. was favored to retain the Cup it had won two years earlier, but were beaten handily 17.5 to 10.5.Finau tied for the second-best record on the American side behind Justin Thomas with his 2-1 mark. He won his opening Four-ball match with Koepka, but the pair lost the second day. Then Finau defeated England’s Tommy Fleetwood 6 & 4 in his singles match. Deseret News Finau is currently ranked No. 16 in the world. This fall his best finish on the PGA Tour this fall is a tie for ninth at the Shriners Hospital for Children Open in October. Pan, Joaquín Niemann, Sungjae Im, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman, Haotong Li, Cameron Smith, Adam Hadwin and Byeong Hun An.The Presidents Cup began in 1994 as a competition between the best golfers in the United States against the top players from around the world, outside of Europe, whose top golfers compete in the Ryder Cup. The United States has dominated the competition, winning 10 times and losing once, in 1998 with the only tie coming in 2003.Earlier in the week, two-time defending Utah State Amateur champion Preston Summerhays, won two of his three matches in the Junior Presidents Cup at the same venue as the U.S. took a 13-11 victory over the International team. Professional golfer, Tony Finau has a laugh with teammate Grace Summerhays as he and Daniel Summerhays play a scramble Saturday, June 13, 2015, at Nibley Park Golf Course in Salt Lake City. 29 March 2011Delivering a public lecture at New York University on Monday, South African Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe dismissed negative perceptions of Africa, saying the continent was ripe with opportunities for those willing to make investments.Motlanthe is on a four-day working visit aimed at boosting relations between South Africa and its second-biggest trade partner, as well as getting US buy-in for South Africa’s new economic strategy.Africa’s ‘Lions on the Move’In his lecture on Monday, Motlanthe cited a June 2010 report by the McKinsey Global Institute entitled Lions on the Move, which reflected the shifting wisdom on Africa in finding that:Africa’s collective gross domestic product (GDP) reached US$1.6-trillion in 2008.Africa’s combined consumer spending topped $860-billion in 2008.Africa’s mobile phone subscribers grew from 184-million in 2000 to 500-million in 2010.At least 20 African companies now enjoy annual revenue of $3-billion or more.Foreign direct investment in Africa reached $514-billion in 2009, up from $154-billion in 2000.“These developments are encouraging as Africa strives for greater regional integration, fair trade and a reformed international financial system,” Motlanthe said. For its part, South Africa – which accounts for only 5% of Africa’s population, but 50% of its trade – recognised that its own development and security were intertwined with the reconstruction and revitalisation of Africa, and thus supported the continent’s efforts to diversify and strengthen its economic capabilities.Motlanthe challenged the government and people of the United States, especially Africans in the Diaspora, to contribute towards building the African continent, particularly in the areas of education, capacity building and skills development.Call to Africa’s DiasporaWhereas in the past skilled Africans migrated to other countries across the world, the need to “reverse the emigration of much-needed and strategic skills is a critical issue for our continent,” Motlanthe said.“Ironically, in every developmental problem in Africa lie new vistas of opportunities which have the potential to absorb African skills that reside abroad.”South Africa, Motlanthe said, was investing in its human capital “in the knowledge that a skilled citizenry drives research, development and innovation, and ultimately spurs the economy to higher rates of growth”.Universities and colleges play a critical role in this, and “a university such as the University of New York can help us with the necessary intellectual apparatus to manage our developmental challenges.“We call upon the American people in different fields of human endeavour to once again join hands with us, so that together we can contribute to the achievement of these important goals of reconstruction and development.“In effect, challenges of development in Africa offer opportunities for academics and intellectuals in the United States and elsewhere in the developed world to make a meaningful contribution in this regard.“The partnership we are calling for works out to a win-win situation in that Africa is ripe with opportunities,” Motlanthe said.“What this means is that while the American partners bring invaluable capital investment, they also stand to gain in terms of healthy returns.”New growth path to address inequalityAlso on Monday, during a visit to the New York Stock Exchange, the Deputy President said that, although South Africa was battling inequality, its New Growth Path aimed to set the economy on a road of inclusive and equitable growth.“The biggest challenge for South Africa remains the deep inequalities left by apartheid,” Motlanthe said. “Despite the strength of our economy, it is still one of the most inequitable in the world.”Motlanthe said South Africa faced high structural unemployment and deep disparities in access to infrastructure and market institutions. “This kind of inequality and division is not sustainable,” he said. The country’s New Growth Path aims to create five-million new jobs by 2020.“Like other emerging economies, we need international investment to support productive activities that increase the overall competitiveness of our economy. We are of course most interested in direct investment that brings with it skills, cutting-edge technologies, and access to global markets.”South Africa plans to invest over R700-billion in infrastructure over the next three years, mostly for power generation and to upgrade rail and road networks.“We will seek to support infrastructure and productive investments across Africa, especially to build logistics infrastructure linking southern and central Africa,” Motlanthe said.Motlanthe is being accompanied on his trip by the Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson, Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel, and Deputy International Relations Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim.Motlanthe will hold talks with US Vice President Joe Biden in Washington DC on Tuesday, before meeting the American Chamber of Business and speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations. He will end his trip in Chicago on Thursday.SAinfo reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? See: Using SAinfo material
Kagisho Dikgacoi (left) has started a programme that aims to empower and educate underprivileged South Africans aged 18 to 24 through football (Images: Dikgacoi’s facebook page)Bafana Bafana midfielder, Kagisho Dikgacoi, may have spent most of his playing career in the UK, but he has not forgotten where his roots are; through his charity, the Kagisho Dikgacoi Foundation, he wants to give back to his hometown of Brandfort.Partnering with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation and the Crystal Palace F.C. Foundation, Dikgacoi’s foundation launched the Isagoyarana Football Coaching Development Programme (IFCDP) in March, 2014. The programme aims to empower and educate underprivileged South Africans aged 18 to 24 through football.Dikgacoi said that with the IFCDP, the three organisations will engage directly with South African government and the private sector to develop the sport in the country. The programme, based in Bloemfontein, will target unemployed youngsters who also lack access to education, training and mentors. “It will focus on job creation, developing valuable life skills as well as identifying talent both on and off the football pitch,” said Dikgacoi. He credits his grandparents and mother for teaching him about community service from a young age. “Ever since I turned professional I have been giving back to the community on a personal level. But I can make more of a difference through setting up my own foundation.”Dikgacoi said that poverty in South Africa prevents gifted youth from realising their potential. He added that the foundations’ partnership will unearth these talents; “We want to help as many people as we can. If I can say in a year that we have helped hundreds of kids get jobs and maybe some working for the foundation itself that would be awesome.”It is not the first time Dikgacoi’s foundation is partnering with Crystal Palace F.C. Foundation for a programme. In June 2014, both organisations, along with Exercise Teachers Academy (known as ETA College), hosted an accredited football coaching course for 30 participants -most from disadvantaged backgrounds – from Bloemfontein. Some are coaches for high school and local club teams but do not possess the basic knowledge to make a real impact. The project aimed to provide a level one qualification to improve participants’ quality of football coaching to increase their employment opportunities. It is also not the first time the Rio Ferdinand Foundation has been involved in a project in South Africa. In 2012, it partnered with the Breaking Barriers Programme, Active Communities Network and ETA College to deliver sporting sessions and coaching and educational workshops to youth from disadvantaged communities in Cape Town.Tough tackling Dikgacoi (left) credits his grandparents and mother for teaching him about community service from a young ageABOUT DIKGACOIDikgacoi was born in Brandfort near Bloemfontein, where crime and drug abuse is prevalent. At age 20 he joined lower-league side Bloemfontein Young Tigers before being snatched up by Golden Arrows. In 2009, he signed for London-based club Fulham after a successful trial and has played in the UK ever since. In the past three years he has been a vital player in Crystal Palace’s setup. However, he deigned to sign a new contract with the club and instead opted to join Cardiff City, completing the deal in June this year.Dikgacoi credits football with keeping him off the streets and his grandfather for inspiring him to take up the sport and turn it into a career. Before he started the foundation, Dikgacoi was involved in numerous charitable ventures including mentoring young footballers through the Crystal Palace F.C. Foundation and hosting a regular youth tournament in his hometown. The Kagisho Dikgacoi Foundation was established in the UK in 2013 to improve the lives of young adults in South Africa through training in sports coaching, management, employability skills, and by providing job opportunities. The foundation runs four programmes in Brandfort; these include a youth football tournament; a scholarship fund that aids children whose parents cannot afford school fees; a sporting equipment fund that provides impoverished schools with sports gear; and an enterprise fund that sponsors social projects that benefit youth.
A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#Analysis#web marshall kirkpatrick Have you turned up your nose at YouTube for being born from low quality, financially unsustainable, pirated content? If you’ve made that argument in conversation before (and we now many people do) – new claims from YouTube itself now indicate that you’d be wrong. The official Google Blog made a post this morning following up on a New York Times story last week where the company claimed that 90% of the owners of copyrighted content are now advertising against pirated video they own when they find it using YouTube’s new content ID technology. The news upends many long held beliefs about the site.Argument: Content ID is Next to Impossible Many have argued that YouTube wasn’t capable of finding all the pirated content uploaded to its site – that it’s been an arms race pitting human monitors and shoddy ID technology against a sea of users uploading content. Video maverick Mark Cuban has argued that YouTube’s claim it can’t identify content was refuted by the fact that it manages to keep porn off the site and thus that the company couldn’t plead ignorance about copyright either.Right: We don’t know if there’s some direct financial overlap between Katy Perry’s publishers and the ringtone site advertising on this video of hers, but at 600K views we’re pretty sure the video’s rights holders have seen it and chosen to let it remain on the site. Is that “what good girls do?”Now it appears that YouTube’s newest content ID technology is doing quite a good job of finding copyrighted content. That alone is a game changer.Argument: Media Companies Don’t Want Low Quality Versions of Their Content on 3rd Party SitesIt’s also been argued that many media companies are unwilling to have their content appear online in any form other than high quality files on their own webistes. That way they can maximize ad revenue and protect their brands. YouTube’s claim that 90% of content owners who find their work on YouTube are running ads on the site instead of demanding it be removed indicates a sea change in big copyright holder attitudes.Scarcity is no longer a tenable strategy in a world of digital content and file quality is clearly not as important to consumers as many content producers believed it would be. Imagine what the web would be like if music producers took a similar strategy with mp3 files on other sites. Those same parties are undoubtedly among the participants in YouTube’s new program, using the ID technology to find songs being used along with user created video. Unfortunately, the music industry may be too greedy to support this same kind of model throughout a whole ecosystem of websites. Witness the plight of Pandora, a wildly popular service that’s trying to play by the rules.Argument: YouTube Wouldn’t Be What it Is Without Pirated ContentOne of the most commonly made critiques of YouTube is that it was only able to ramp up fast because it caught copyright holders by surprise; that it was born of illigitimate uploads of pirated TV shows and movie clips. The latest turn of events leads us to wonder whether this question was turned around the wrong way. Couldn’t we just as well assert that YouTube was lucky to survive before a time when copyright holders understood that they had options with content that they owned rights to on the site? Had copyright holders come down hard and fast in the earliest days, as they did in later months surrounding the Google acquisition, then YouTube wouldn’t still be pushing the envelope and opening new doors for distribution and monetization today. There’s a world of possibilities beyond even what’s being done today by the most open minded copyright owners. The Times article mentions Electronic Arts, for example, who encourages users to upload Spore related content and then uses YouTube’s ID technology to find it and highlight the best stuff. Any number of other campaigns have tried to get people to use a common tag in their metadata or upload through a dedicated portal powered by the YouTube API. YouTube is a chaotic place, though – companies may get the greatest connection with their fans by letting those fans upload how they like and using YouTube’s ID tech to find them afterword. This is BigThis isn’t just about copyright and advertising, this is about a new paradigm that big copyright holders may be catching up with. From video to user data, it’s not about scarcity and silos anymore. It’s about keeping your users and fans through better service and compelling value-ads. Let’s hope this YouTube experience is more than just a flash in the pan and that the industry is genuinely moving in this direction.
